Anxiety

Understanding anxiety disorders and finding calm

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety disorders involve more than temporary worry or fear. For a person with an anxiety disorder, the anxiety does not go away and can get worse over time.

Common Signs & Symptoms

  • Excessive worry that is difficult to control
  • Restlessness or feeling on edge
  • Fatigue or difficulty sleeping
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Irritability
  • Muscle tension
  • Panic attacks (in some types of anxiety disorders)

How You Can Help

Support someone with anxiety by validating their feelings without reinforcing fears. Encourage them to seek professional help and learn about relaxation techniques that can be practiced together.

Cultural Considerations

In Gambian communities, anxiety symptoms may sometimes be described in physical terms rather than emotional ones. Understanding these cultural expressions is important for proper recognition and support.
