Psychosis

Understanding psychosis beyond misconceptions

What is Psychosis?

Psychosis is a condition that affects the mind, where there has been some loss of contact with reality. It can involve hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking and speech.

Common Signs & Symptoms

  • Hallucinations (seeing, hearing, or feeling things that aren't there)
  • Delusions (strong beliefs that aren't shared by others)
  • Disorganized thinking and speech
  • Changes in behavior and emotions
  • Difficulty distinguishing between what is real and what isn't
  • Social withdrawal
  • Decline in self-care or personal hygiene

How You Can Help

Stay calm and communicate clearly with someone experiencing psychosis. Don't challenge their delusions directly but focus on feelings. Help them access professional treatment, which is essential.

Cultural Considerations

In some Gambian communities, psychosis may be attributed to spiritual causes. While respecting these beliefs, it's important to also ensure access to medical treatment, as psychosis responds well to proper clinical care.
