Substance Use

Understanding substance use disorders with compassion

What is Substance Use?

Substance use disorders occur when the recurrent use of alcohol and/or drugs causes clinically significant impairment, including health problems, disability, and failure to meet major responsibilities.

Common Signs & Symptoms

  • Using substances in larger amounts or for longer than intended
  • Unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control use
  • Spending a lot of time obtaining, using, or recovering from substances
  • Cravings to use the substance
  • Failing to fulfill obligations at work, school, or home
  • Continued use despite social or interpersonal problems
  • Giving up important activities because of substance use

How You Can Help

Approach loved ones with substance use disorders with compassion rather than judgment. Encourage treatment, set healthy boundaries, and consider joining a support group for families affected by addiction.

Cultural Considerations

Stigma around substance use can be particularly strong in The Gambia. Creating safe spaces for open discussion and emphasizing that addiction is a health condition, not a moral failing, is essential for effective support.
